Dr. Anda Vlad is an immunologist interested in learning how the immune system responds to developing tumors, and understanding the early progression to cancer from precursor lesions. The focus of Dr. Vlad's studies are ovarian cancer and endometriosis, a chronic benign inflammatory disease. Ovarian cancer mortality has only marginally improved in the last decades, maintaining its place as the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. Using a combination of murine preclinical models and clinical specimens, Anda and her colleagues in the lab have identified how endometriosis and endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer triggers immunity in the host and how the anti-tumor immune response can be augmented using cancer vaccines and immune modulators. In collaboration with her colleagues in the gynecology-oncology division, Dr. Vlad focuses on implementing new clinical trials that can explore new combination therapies in ovarian cancer patients.
