University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI)

Welcome

Dear UPCI Members:

We are pleased to invite you to attend the UPCI 30th Anniversary Symposium III on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 and the 28th Annual UPCI Scientific Retreat on June 16 and 17, 2016. Both events will be held at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

The Symposium, co-chaired by Drs. Robert L. Ferris, Lisa Butterfield, Dario A.A. Vignali, and Hassane Zarour, will focus on "Cancer Immunology." This event concludes our year-long recognition of UPCI's 30th Anniversary: "Celebrating 30 Years of Cancer Research and Innovation."

Presentations at this year's retreat will focus on the topics of "Personalized Medicine," "Illuminating Cancer from Single Molecules to Tumors" and "UPCI SPORES." These three topics are of importance and relevance to all who are interested in cancer.

The Ronald B. Herberman Lectureship Keynote Address at the retreat will be given by Dr. Levi Garraway, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and an Institute Member of the Broad Institute. Dr. Garraway has made seminal research contributions in cancer genomics, drug resistance and cancer precision medicine. His expertise has guided precision medicine initiatives at many cancer centers worldwide. It also inspired the launch of Foundation Medicine Inc., a genomics-based cancer diagnostics company he co-founded. He has earned several awards and honors, including the prestigious Outstanding Investigator Award from the National Cancer Institute, and was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator in 2015. Dr. Garraway's Keynote topic will be "New Frontiers in Cancer Precision Medicine."

We very much look forward to your attendance and participation in this wonderful opportunity for all members of the Institute to learn about and contribute to our scientific environment through formal and informal interactions. We especially encourage you to bring students and fellows, as our trainees are so vital to our future. All information and forms regarding the retreat can be found on the UPCI Web site. For questions, please contact Lisa George, Retreat Coordinator, at georgel@upmc.edu.
