University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI)

Welcome

Dear UPCI Members:

We are pleased to invite you to attend the UPCI Satellite Conference on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 and the 29th Annual UPCI Scientific Retreat on Thursday and Friday, June 22 and 23, 2017. Both events will be held at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum on Fifth Ave. in Oakland.

The Satellite Conference is co-chaired by Drs. Bennett Van Houten and Patricia Opresko, and it will focus on "New Therapeutic Strategies in Killing Tumor Cells: Exploiting Genome Instability." The guest speaker will be David Cortez, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry, Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, and Professor of Cancer Biology, Biochemistry Department, at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

This year's Retreat will focus on the topics of “Development of Novel Therapeutics: From Mouse to Man,” and “Shining New Light on the Fog: Advances in the Science of Neurocognitive Function Across the Disease Trajectory” - which will include the perspectives of a patient and patient advocate – and finally, “Combinations Enabling Immunotherapeutic Response.” These three topics are of importance and relevance to all who are interested in cancer. We are also pleased to bring back a new version of last year’s popular Lightning Round.

This year's Ronald B. Herberman Lectureship Keynote Address will be given by Dr. Eric Fearon, Director of the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Fearon is a nationally recognized investigator in cancer genetics whose research has led to a greater understanding of gene defects that cause colon and rectal cancer to develop and spread. His Keynote talk is entitled “Molecular Insights into Colorectal Cancer Pathogenesis.”

We very much look forward to your attendance and participation in this wonderful opportunity for all members of the Institute to learn about and contribute to our scientific environment through formal and informal interactions. We especially encourage you to bring your students and fellows, as our trainees are so vital to our future. All information and forms regarding the retreat can be found on this web site. For questions, please contact Lisa George, Retreat Coordinator, at georgel@upmc.edu.

Regards,
Ed and Lin
